Thierry Henry handball – The fallout
With the fallout of Thierry Henry’s handball still rumbling – even the political leaders of both France and Ireland have become involved I was suddenly reminded of Robbie Fowlers attempts to get a penalty decision overturned. During a game against Arsenal Fowler stumbled in the box and was awarded a penalty and sportingly told the referee ‘I tripped over my own feet’ nonetheless incredibly the referee still gave the penalty that Fowler subsequently missed (was it on purpose? I suppose we will never know!)
Why couldn’t Henry have done the same thing? Now it is perfectly possible that Henry handled the ball instinctively (yes it can happen on the football pitch!) but why not own up to the misdemeanor straight away to the Ref? OK so the outcome may have been the same as that with Robbie Fowler but at least he would have been remembered for it rather than the legacy that he will now forever be remembered for.
